Common toe problems that can make your feet look abnormal

Hallux Limitus

Hallux limitus is the medical term for limited movement of the big toe or first metatarsophalangeal joint. For the feet to function properly when walking, a certain degree of flexibility is required in the big toe joint.

Abnormal foot anatomy or previous trauma, such as a toe injury or fractured toe, can cause a restriction of the big toe. This can progress to arthritis and complete loss of range of motion, known as hallux rigigus .

Symptoms include:

  • Pain in the big toe joint.
  • Bursitis (lump) on top of the bunion
  • Callus on the big toe

Common toe problems, including bursitis, tailor's, big toe, and bunion, can be caused by abnormal foot anatomy and function and shoes that are too small.

If left untreated, toe problems can affect your balance, walking, and running. By understanding the signs and symptoms, you can be treated and ensure a healthy, functional leg.
