A An autoimmune disorder or disease occurs when a person's immune system mistakenly attacks their own cells and tissues, thinking they are sick. There are over 100 different autoimmune diseases, and while some target one organ in your body (like the thyroid in Hashimoto's thyroiditis), others target multiple organs (like the skin, kidneys, and others in lupus).
