How to increase its shelf life

If you live longer than the average person, you can say that you have longevity . Fighting for maximum age is the goal of longevity. This can potentially be accomplished by maintaining healthy behaviors and attitudes.

Longevity is defined as "long life" or "long service life". The term comes from the Latin word longaevitās . In this word, you can see how the words longus (length) and aevum (age) combine to mean a person who has lived for a long time.

The most important part of this definition is its comparative nature. Long life means more than anything, and that is life expectancy .

How is longevity determined?

Biologists sometimes define longevity as the average life expectancy under ideal conditions. It's hard to say which one is perfect. Much medical research is being done on the 'right' amount and type of exercise, the best diet to maximize your life expectancy, and whether certain pharmaceuticals or supplements can help improve your longevity.

Life expectancy has increased significantly over the past century, thanks in large part to advances in medicine that have nearly eliminated some deadly infectious diseases.

The middle child, born in 1900, lived for about half a century. Currently, the life expectancy of people in the United States is almost 79 years: 81 for women and 76 for men, and even longer in some countries.

It is possible that the true longevity of humanity is much greater. People could live longer if they could create the ideal conditions for healthy eating and exercise.

What determines your longevity?

You may think that your genes determine your life expectancy, but the truth is that genetics account for 30 percent of your life at most. The rest depends on your demeanor, attitude, environment, and a bit of luck.

You may have heard of various methods of prolonging life. Note that none of these have been tested on humans, and most of them are just theories. The only proven way to live longer is through a healthy lifestyle.

5 ways to increase its lifespan

What if you want to exceed the average and maximize your life expectancy? Here is a list of things to consider:

  1. Get regular exercise. Research shows that moderate exercise, if done regularly, can turn back time in your DNA .
  2. Fill a plate with vegetables. While there is a great debate about the best diet to increase longevity, almost all diets agree that eating more vegetables is the right way to go.
  3. Consider intermittent fasting (with many options to achieve it). Fasting has been shown to significantly prolong the life (and improve the health) of mice. Research from the 1930s showed that caloric restriction increased the lifespan of mice and other experimental species.
  4. A study published in the journal Cell Metabolism in 2018 examined 53 non-obese adults over a two-year period. The test group limited their calorie intake by 15%. Metabolic studies showed that the test group had evidence of less oxidative stress / damage compared to the control group.
  5. Get enough sleep. Most people feel best when they sleep seven to nine hours a night.
  6. Handle stress with care. Stress can have harmful effects on your body, and it can also contribute to unhealthy behaviors like overeating or smoking.
  7. Develop personal relationships. It seems that spending time with loved ones actually increases life expectancy, perhaps because it reduces stress or risky behaviors. A study by researchers at the University of Exeter School of Medicine in England found that volunteers had a 22% reduction in mortality compared to volunteers .
  8. Do not smoke or consume excessive amounts of alcohol.

Commit today to making one healthy change per week. Before you know it, you'll feel better and be on the road to longevity.

Frequently asked questions

  • It is not necessarily an ideal lifestyle, but adopting certain habits can contribute to longevity:

    • Be physically active.
    • Eat a healthy diet.
    • Get at least seven to nine hours of sleep every night.
    • Manage stress by taking deep breaths, taking care of your body, taking time to relax and connect with others.
    • Spend time with friends and family (this can reduce stress).
    • Avoid smoking and drinking too much alcohol.

  • Genetic factors are believed to account for 25-30% of life expectancy. Exactly which genes are involved is still being explored, but variations in several genes are associated with longevity, including the APOE, FOXO3 and CETP genes.
