An umbrella term for a group of conditions that includes very itchy, red, scaly patches, eczema, known as an 'itchy rash,' is very common. The cause is unknown, but researchers believe a combination of environmental and genetic factors is involved.
A form of eczema that usually occurs on the tips or sides of the fingers and toes, known as dyshidrotic eczema , causes severe itching and red, scaly patches of cracked skin with small blisters.
Triggers for eczema flare-ups are different for each person, but typical causes include irritation from excessive exposure to moisture (sweat) or excessively dry skin due to low humidity or excessive heat .
An important part of eczema treatment is the regular use of topical skin creams and ointments to rehydrate the skin, balance the skin's pH, and act as a protective barrier against dryness or sweat. Topical corticosteroids may also be needed to suppress inflammation .
