Stroke – Overview and More

Strokes can occur in different ways and affect different areas of the brain. The degree of damage varies depending on the part of the brain that is damaged.

The most common type of stroke is ischemic stroke, which occurs when a blood clot enters the brain, disrupting blood flow and depriving the brain of oxygen. Hemorrhagic strokes, which account for about 13% of strokes, occur when a blood vessel ruptures causing bleeding in the brain .

After a stroke, many patients undergo physical, occupational, and speech therapy to restore function. In general, the earlier a stroke is recognized and treated, the better the prognosis.
